What Is the Score of the Delphos Saint Johns Blue Jays
DELPHOS – Delphos Jefferson shook off some first half jittersto record a 28-14 win over Delphos St. John's in the Delphos Bowl Saturday.
The Wildcats outscored the Blue Jays 28-6 in the final two quarters to earn bragging rights in the first regular season crosstown rivalry game.
Delphos Jefferson's defense was a major factor in giving the Wildcats the victory as they recorded six interceptions, one fumble recovery and three sacks. Two of the picks led to touchdowns.
This is Jefferson's first win in two seasons.
"It's a great feeling," Jefferson head coach Ben Rahrig said. "They didn't panic at halftime when we got down at halftime. I told them I had confidence in them and they came back and took care of business in the second half.
"We got a lot of turnovers and the at was the key to the game and it is really great seeing kids learn how to win and hopefully carry this over to next week.
Going into the second half the Wildcats were down 8-0 at halftime but Jefferson, perhaps shaking off those first half jitters, came out by scoring on its first three possessions in the third quarter to grab the lead.
The Wildcats marched 59 yards for six points which was capped off Colin Bailey, facing a third and 20 from his 37 yard line, found a wide open Andrew Miller down the middle of the field for a touchdown. After a missed 2-point conversion. Delphos St. John's was up 8-6 with 8:46 left in the third quarter.
Miller's big night was just beginning. After scoring the touchdown, Miller, who would end up with two interceptions on the night, came back on defense and came up with a huge pick off on the ensuing Blue Jay drive at his own 12 and was tackled at the 6 yard line. Jefferson then moved the ball to the one yard line on three plays and on a fourth and goal from the one, Miller, from his slot receiver position, ran under center and bulled it in for the score. Miller then made a tip-toe catch in the end zone to complete the two point conversion.
Another interception by the Wildcats on the next drive, this time by Trent Teman at the 46 gave Jefferson the ball back and after Teman moved it to the 45 and then a penalty moved it to the 30, Jefferson was back in scoring position.
Six plays later, Jefferson was celebrating the touchdown when Bailey ran it in from four yards out.
The Blue Jays briefly stopped Jefferson's scoring parade when they scored on a 26 yard pass play to Gavin Fritto to slice the lead to 21-14 with 10:31 left in the game.
But the Wildcats quelled any Blue Jay momentum when Bailey, after a good return, streaked 44 yards for his second touchdown to make it a 28-14 with 10:10 remaining.
Delphos St. John's held an 8-0 lead over Delphos Jefferson in a game dominated by defense Friday night.
The Blue Jays scored on an 8-yard run from Blake Ricker to cap off an eight play, 77 yard drive that began with 1:48 left in the first half. Ricker, who scored on the option play, had the big run in the drive when he scampered 41 yards on the same option play to put the ball at the 7-yard line.
Prior to the score, the two defenses made it tough for either team to move the ball.
Jefferson was limited to 29 yards on the ground and two yards through the air.
Bailey finished the game with 124 yards on 24 carries and two touchdowns and he also threw for a touchdown.
Delphos St. John's Ricker had 106 yard s on 13 carries and one touchdown.
"On offense we sort of stuttered around but we found our rhythm in the second half," Rahrig said. "Once we started to get first downs we started to click and then Colin made some big plays,"
